Access to care, for real.
Most days, we’re elbow-deep in forty surgical patients. There’s rarely room for walk-in emergencies.
Nina and her brother were just five weeks old when a neighbor rushed them in at the end of our workday. A dog had attacked them. Both were tiny foundling community kittens, barely a pound each. The ER wasn’t financially possible, and options were limited. Their finder was willing to help if we could treat them. We made it work.
Despite everyone’s efforts, Nina’s brother didn’t survive. Nina did, but barely. We stabilized her, managed her pain, and once she was strong enough, amputated her damaged leg. When she woke up, she ate a snack and started batting at her toys. That’s when we knew she’d be okay.
By three months old, she was thriving and came back for her spay. She now lives with her finders and Flor the beagle. Nina keeps up just fine on three legs.
We get emails or calls about patients like Nina every week. They’re animals who need surgery outside the routine. Having the ability to treat them depends on capacity, and donor support is what makes that possible.
How donor support turns capacity into access
Cases like Nina’s take skill, staff time, and a surgery suite that’s ready to go.
This year, by adding a second surgeon on Sundays, we’ve gone from four solo-surgeon days to the equivalent of five.
That shift means more than 6,300 spay/neuter surgeries in 2025 — 1,000 more than last year.
Our next goal is to add another full surgical day each week and further increase this capacity.
Each additional surgery day means more patients treated, just like Nina. Fewer left waiting for care, and more animals treated on time.
Access to care becomes real only when there’s capacity to deliver it.
