Inside a Surgery Day
By 7 AM, the parking lot is already filling up.
Some patients arrive in carriers with handwritten notes taped to the top. Others come in humane traps covered with blankets. A few owners have driven more than an hour because they could not find surgery anywhere closer.
Inside the clinic, the surgery board fills quickly: Spays and neuters, mass removals, a tail amputation, an enucleation, a community cat with an infected wound.
By mid-morning, patients are moving steadily through prep, anesthesia, surgery, and recovery.
Most people know us for high-volume spay/neuter work.
But every week, we also help animals whose families are trying to deal with problems before they turn into emergencies, surrender situations, or months of untreated pain.
Many of these are problems that become much bigger when families have nowhere to go for surgery.
Meanwhile, the clinic keeps moving. Laundry running. Instrument packs being sterilized. Recovery patients waking up and getting a snack before heading home later that afternoon. Phones ringing. More surgeries being scheduled.
Some days there’s room to fit in an urgent case. Some days there isn’t.
When there isn’t, animals wait while a tumor keeps growing or a wound keeps getting worse.
That is why we're working to add another day of surgery each week. More appointments. More surgeries. Less waiting.
For many families, getting an earlier appointment can mean treating a problem before it becomes an emergency.
Most people only see one part of a surgery day: drop-off in the morning and pickup later that afternoon.
Behind the scenes, the clinic stays in motion from morning until evening.
Working Together for Animals
You may have heard about the recent fire at Berkeley Animal Care Services (BACS). Fortunately, no animals or people were injured.
Animal Fix Clinic is currently providing temporary emergency housing for several dogs displaced by the fire while BACS works to resume normal operations.
